CALGARY’S ECONOMY PUTS THE UFC GYM OUT OF BUSINESS

Champions Creed MMA, Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu, Kids Classes, Kids Camps in Calgary

The UFC Gym Calgary, formerly in SW Calgary, recently closed. Even though fitness is reported as being a $26 billion dollar industry, tough economic times in Calgary have possibly affected the closure of the gym, which was part of the UFC franchise.

The UFC Gym Calgary was located in SW Calgary near Chinook Mall, coincidentally close to our very own Champion’s Creed facility.

The UFC Gym Calgary’s local website was pulled down, and no information is provided on the official, global UFC Gym website; however, they do mention their criteria for selecting the type of business owners they choose:

UFC GYM is not looking for people who are successful at starting companies, but rather those who know how to follow an operations manual, have some entrepreneurial spirit within them and the desire to contribute to their community.

How much does it cost to build a UFC Gym franchise location?

Our prototypical UFC GYM franchise location ranges in size from 3,000 square feet to 25,000+. Due to varying markets and conditions, your costs for CLASS may range from $295,057 to $620,007; CORE may range from $753,057 to $1,453,507; and SIGNATURE may range from $2,388,507 to $4,912,007.

So, what happened?

We’re just speculating, but perhaps what contributed to their lack of success in Calgary’s tough economic market was a shortage of marketing or business growth support services. We’re not sure because the UFC GYM franchise website doesn’t talk about it.

We imagine that their franchise model and manuals had marketing as part of the plan, but from our experience, marketing in Calgary, AB has to be extremely pro-active these days.

An integral part

Over the past 20 years of being in business (formerly BDB Martial Arts), Champion’s Creed founders, Brian & Sheila Bird have found that both marketing and business growth support services have been integral to building their business.

The Champion’s Creed Way

Here are some business tips from Champion’s Creed’s very own business playbook:

  • Instructor training — investing heavily in the staff and instructors that are part of the “family” at Champion’s Creed
  • Being involved in the community (classes for special needs students, a fund for amateur athletes, fundraisers for members in need)
  • Intensive business training for our owners through globally recognized programs
  • Working with a specialized marketing team to realize the goals of the business
  • Specialized training for martial arts businesses
