IN 2017, CHAMPION’S CREED WAS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE A NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH AAFS CALGARY (AUTISM ASPERGERS FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY OF CALGARY) TO OFFER MARTIAL ARTS CLASSES TO INDIVIDUALS WITH AUTISM

Symptoms of autism vary greatly from person to person, but generally, people with autism struggle with verbal and non-verbal communication and social interactions.

MARTIAL ARTS BENEFITS FOR AUTISM

Studies and stories from teachers and family members have shown that martial arts (which involve learning through repetitive movements) can benefit individuals with autism. Martial arts can help people on the autism spectrum make friends and work through challenges in a supportive environment.

Since one of our core values is to take care of our community, we initiated the conversation with AAFS because we also have the resources to help.

MUAY THAI AND BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU TAILORED TO INDIVIDUALS WITH AUTISM

For ten weeks, from October 14th to December 16th, 2017, ten participants with autism had the opportunity to take part in one-hour classes that were a mix of half Muay Thai and half Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

This program is run through AAFS by Scott Godfrey (Specialized Program Coordinator/Social Experience Guide), also a former Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu student. Our teachers, Dan Buchwald and Mike Smallwood, are very experienced in working with individuals with autism.

The program, in 2017, took place on Saturday mornings. All participants received a complimentary Champion’s Creed shirt at the end of the program as a souvenir.

A minimum of four staff members was present for these classes. Mike taught Muay Thai and Dan taught Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Brian Bird, Champion’s Creed founder and 3rd-degree black belt, was present at these classes for assistance.

Our instructors, Dan Buchwald and Mike Smallwood, are stepping up and doing something really darn good, showing leadership and setting an example for the rest of the students.
